The challenge
A planned detour is usually communicated with a notice describing the diversion and the temporary stops. Every driver who works on that route must read it, remember it and apply it, sometimes in the dark or in traffic. Missed diversions lead to buses stuck in closed streets, missed temporary stops and complaints.
How it works
- The route path is redrawn on a map in the administration tool, following the diversion. The path is snapped to the road network automatically.
- The update is sent to the devices.
- Drivers are guided along the new path with turn-by-turn visual and audio instructions, and the companion website shows the same path.
- When the works end, the original route is restored.
If the detour is simple, the driver can also rely on the off-route alert: the app warns the driver as soon as the bus leaves the planned route.
Typical situations
- Long-term roadworks or construction sites.
- Street closures for markets, festivals or sport events.
- Temporary relocation of stops or terminuses.
- Service changes and restructured routes, introduced from the updated GTFS.
Benefits
- Every driver follows the same, correct diversion.
- Less stress for drivers and fewer calls to the operations control centre.
- A better and more consistent service for passengers during disruptions.
