# Bus driver GPS vs Google Maps or Waze: why buses need their own navigation app

> Google Maps and Waze are built for cars. Bus drivers need to follow the exact scheduled route, serve every stop and keep to the timetable. Here is how My Bus Driver GPS compares.

## Google Maps or Waze: why bus drivers need a dedicated GPS

Consumer navigation apps such as Google Maps, Waze or Apple Maps are excellent for cars, but they are designed to find the *fastest* way to a destination. A bus driver has a different job: follow the *exact* route of the timetable, serve every stop and stay on schedule. My Bus Driver GPS Companion is a navigation app built for that job.

### Comparison at a glance

| Need of a bus driver | Consumer GPS (Google Maps, Waze…) | My Bus Driver GPS Companion |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Follow the official route path | Computes its own fastest route and may leave the bus route | Guides along the route path published in the operator's GTFS, matched to the road network |
| Serve every bus stop | Designed around addresses and points of interest | Every stop of the trip is shown on the map with its name and scheduled time |
| Keep to the timetable | Only an estimated time of arrival at the destination | On Time Running indicator at each stop: early (red), on time (green) or late (orange) |
| Choose the right trip | You type an address | The driver selects operator, route, direction, date and departure time: the app loads that exact trip |
| Bus-only infrastructure | Car rules: busways and bus gates are usually avoided | Bus routing profile that allows busways, bus lanes in both directions and bus gates |
| Leaving the route | Silently recalculates a new route | Spoken and on-screen off-route alert, so the driver can get back on the planned route |
| Connectivity | Generally needs mobile data for maps and routing | Maps, routing and timetable are stored on the device: navigation works offline |
| Driver training and route booklets | Outside its scope | Companion website with every route, stop and turn-by-turn step, printable and shareable |

### The route is set by the network

For a bus, the path between two stops is defined by the network planners: it serves specific streets, avoids roads that are too narrow, and uses bus lanes. A consumer app will happily send the driver down a shortcut that misses three stops. My Bus Driver GPS Companion takes the route shape from the operator's GTFS data and guides the driver along it, turn by turn, with visual and audio instructions.

### Punctuality is part of the job

Running early is as much a problem for passengers as running late. When the bus approaches a stop, the app shows a time bubble comparing the current time with the scheduled time from the timetable, with a clear colour code. Drivers adjust their speed at a glance on the screen.

### Built for professional use

The app runs on standard Android devices (Android 7.1 or later), keeps the screen on during navigation and guides the driver offline, so a mobile data plan is optional. The operator's data is integrated for them: drivers simply choose their trip and go.

In short: use Google Maps or Waze to drive a car to an address; use a bus driver GPS to drive a bus route, stop by stop, on time.
